On March 14th, 202, Elon Musk bought 9% of Twitter and just around a month later he offered to buy the entire platform for 43 billion dollars, which is way above their market value. The offer is still pending...
People are questioning why Elon Musk wants to buy Twitter so badly. What will he do with it? I think that Musk, as an advocate for free speech is trying to take Twitter over because he does not want people or certain posts to be censored anymore. Political figures like Donald Trump have been banned from Twitter for posting so called "offensive" things but Musk believes that everyone should be able to say whatever they want whenever they want, including Trump, since this is America, a free country. Musk said, “I think it’s very important for there to be an inclusive arena for free speech, having a public platform that is maximally trusted and broadly inclusive is extremely important to the future of civilization.”
Other people believe that Musk has the goal to take Twitter private in order to include another company as part of his portfolio and continue building his empire. Tristan Bove, writer for the Fortune, wrote about the many benefits that could come with making Twitter Public. He said, " A benefit of taking Twitter private would be that it would no longer need to report its quarterly financials to the SEC."
What do you think is Elon Musks motivation for wanting to buy Twitter?
I think it's possible that Elon Musk wants to be twitter to lighten up on censorship on the platform. I think it's also possible that Musk likes twitter, and wanted to buy it in order to expand it, and profit off it. There are definite benefits to having less censorship on twitter, such as increased dialogue and remedying the Steam Pipe Theory of speech. At the same time, twitter is a sort of news source for a lot of people, so I wonder if lessening censorship would lead to an increased circulation of false information.
