The increasing use of technology for young children is harming their emotional and mental health. It decreases social skills while increasing anxiety and depression.
Research shows that teenagers and young adults are the largest group of mobile phone users. According to a recent Eurobarometer survey, 70% of Europeans aged 12-13 own a mobile phone and the number of children five to nine years old owning mobiles has greatly increased over the years. I would assume that this number is worse for Americans.
We need to do something to decrease the phone and technology usage and in turn get kids back outside riding bikes and playing with their friends. I am worried to see what permanent damage this generation of children will face in the future.
I agree that technology does hurt us to a certain extent. For example, apps like instagram and Tiktok are specifically designed to be like slot machines so that they can be addictive. I worry that children will not want to play outside, or use their imaginations anymore because technology can be creative for them. The sheer number of addictive apps and engineered methods of addiction known to big tech is startling and having learned more about social media myself through school and studying it on my own, it really surprises me how easily those in power have come to control the masses. When I do have children I am not going to let them have much or any screen time until they are older and can make decisions for themselves after understanding the ways in which technology can be hurtful. It's upsetting and I'm worried as…
I think that because technology has become so prevalent so quickly, it is hard for us as a society to develop norms for fast-paced innovation. When I was I was 12 my older brother and I shared a Nokia flip phone to call my mom when we needed to be picked up. When my little brother and sister were 12 they both were given smart phones. Another problem is that because of the fact that kids are using smart phones at younger and younger ages, kids then feel excluded when they are the only kid in their class without a phone. It is a pretty scary thought that young kids have access to the horrors that lie on the internet.…
